How to Practise for a Spelling Bee
To practise for a spelling bee, build a short daily routine: hear each word read aloud, say it, then spell it from memory and check it. Twenty minutes a day across a few weeks beats one long session, because spelling sticks through repeated, spaced practice.
Start with the right word list
Spelling bees are often split into a Junior division (Years 3–4) and a Senior division (Years 5–6). Begin with words at your child's level and only move up once they're consistently correct. Spellaroo's Junior and Senior levels mirror this structure, with over 2,200 words pulled from real competition-style lists.
Practise out loud, not just on paper
In the actual bee, words are spoken, not written. Practising the same way matters. Have your child listen to the word, ask for the definition and an example sentence, then spell it aloud. Spellaroo reads every word for you and shows the meaning and a sentence as a hint.
A week-by-week plan
- Weeks 1–2: Learn the foundation list. Focus on accuracy, not speed.
- Weeks 3–4: Mix in harder words and revisit any your child missed.
- Final week: Do short daily reviews of missed words only, and keep it light and fun.
Above all, keep practice positive. Celebrate progress, keep sessions short, and let your child see their score improve over time.
